The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dorwontony Organisation for the Aged (DOfA).

The MoU which came into effect on Tuesday 1st October, 2024, will ensure increased cooperation and collaboration between the two parties in protecting and respecting the rights of the Aged/Older Persons in Sierra Leone.

In her statement, Chairperson of HRCSL, Madam Patricia Narsu Ndanema spoke briefly about the mandate and functions of the Commission. She informed DOfA that the Commission is open to working with them as long as it is for the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.

She made mention of the Protocol to the African Charter on Older Persons which has provisions for transformative changes to ensure societal respect for older persons' rights. “I am happy we are here to make our relationship formal,” she said.

Chief Executive Officer of DOfA, Dorren Barrie said the partnership with the Commission will add credibility to their work as they advocate for the rights and well-being of older persons in the country.

She said part of the collaboration will include sharing with HRCSL complaints on the abuse of the rights of older persons which is normally reported to their office.

“This partnership with the Commission will not only give us strength to do our work but will also make us feel secure,” she said while pleading with the Commission to assign a staff who will be liaising with them and the Commission.
